Getting Started in Affiliate Marketing in 3 Easy Steps

Affiliate marketing can be described as an agreement between a business, offline or online, and a parent company (affiliate) in which the business is rewarded financially for selling the affiliate's products through the business' website, or other online medium. This works well in the sense that the affiliate gains access to much larger markets through the promotion efforts of an independent business, reducing outlay in advertising costs while still profiting from potentially increasing sales and exposure. Every customer who clicks on the business' ads, and subsequently purchases the product(s) generates commissions. The business will not have to concern itself about product shipping, returns or customer service. The commissions are usually based on a percentage of the sales price of the product, and may also include continuity income when the product sale includes a continuity agreement.

For those who are interested in such an arrangement, the three steps described below are essential for continued success...

1) Find an area which you are sincerely interested or passionate. It would be advisable to select an industry in which you have some expertise, as this would flatten the learning curve. It will also be significantly easier to create the website if you have some expertise in the subject matter required for top quality content.

2) Choose your affiliate program carefully. The program should be popular, with fairly high gravity. It should also include good payment levels, as would be expected to cover the costs of advertising (PPC, etc.). The landing pages and sales letters should be well crafted with excellent copywriting, along with other promotional materials.

3) Once you have selected your product and affiliate, then your website and landing pages should be centered in promoting that product. There is work to do here; it would be advisable to look into joining social bookmarking sites, hub pages, creating blogs, and other such media which are basically essential in product promotion. There are numerous resources available for education and information in these areas.

Persistence is important. There is some "overnight success", but it is generally random and very transient. Do not be easily discouraged. It may take up to 6-12 months to become expert in this area, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
